Hem was recommended to me by a work colleague who has resided in Nepal for years and used various guides, including a trekking trip with Hem. I had read, and my colleague confirmed, the advantage of hiring an individual guide instead of trekking with a group. Boy, am I glad I did.

Hem is an experienced and personable guide. His English is excellent. He is from a village located in the hills outside of Pokhara. He worked as a porter & then guide for a major trekking company for about 5 years before starting his own company ten years ago. His prices are good and covered all expenses.

We outlined a plan via email and Hem got the TIMS and ACAP permits for me, which was a big help. Hem even offered that I could join with his family in celebrating Dashain so I could experience local culture.  Along the trek, Hem really enriched my experience by pointing out flora and fauna and their relationship with the local culture.  It was interesting watching him reflexively pick a handful of local grain and rub it between his fingers, gauging how long until it would be ready to harvest.  He is attentive and sharp. At one point he spotted a barking deer in the woods. It was such a treat to see this rare creature! At another spot we saw a group of white monkeys.

I highly recommend hiring a porter in addition to a guide especially if you are trekking a popular route. The lodges prefer to let rooms to larger groups and the guides are on their cell phones along the trail booking rooms ahead. At times Hem sent the porter ahead to guarantee that reserved rooms were kept for us. Westerners and Nepalese alike, seeing his guide union cap would ask him for directions or other suggestions and his chatting with guides he knew that we encountered along the way.

The level of attention and service he gave was most appreciated. I got a bad head cold that really affected my balance so decided to take a rest day in Ghandruk. Hem had me use a local herbal steam treatment to clear my sinuses. I was amazed how quickly this helped! The rest day was very pleasant with a walk to the old Gurung village, watching a Gurung music video being filmed in a field.

Hem was very patient, was attentive and helpful all along the route, chose excellent lodgings, typically with ensuite toilets and or better views and the food options were usually quite good.

For personal service tailoring the trip of a lifetime to your desires and needs, Hem is the perfect guide. I recommend his services wholeheartedly.

My wife and I planned a trek round Poon Hill and Ghorepani this Spring  and had no recommendations for a guide.   I had  found Hem's website on the net so we chose him to take us - a very good choice it was too. Before we arrived I sent him a deposit and photos and he organised a porter and our permits.

We stayed the night before our trek at Fishtail Lodge, Pokhara, and that evening Hem came round to meet us and  discuss the trip. He arranged transport to Biritanti for the start of the walk. It seemed much more personal than using a large tour operator.

The walk took six days and was of medium exertion as we expected. The country side was delightful and varied. Hem was very informative about all aspects of the area-  not only the history of the region, recent events and politics but also the wild life, both flora and fauna.

He also knew the best places to stop, both for meals during the day and places to sleep at night. As neither of us spoke Nepali and our way was easily smoothed in the teahouses.  Each day Hem appeared keen to teach us about his country and show it to us, even setting off up Poon Hill at 4 in the morning!

We looked upon Hem as a friend by the end of the trip, he showed us around Pokhara and arranged a taxi with a stopover in Bandipur on our way back to Kathmandu. We will use him again if we return to trek in Nepal and would thoroughly recommend him as a trekking guide.

Els en Bart (October 2016)

To go on a trekking means to see Nepal from the inside. Together with our experienced guide, Hem Raj Adhikar, we walked four days, the Royal Trekking, and enjoyed beautiful scenery and views. A memorable moment was in the morning at 6am to see the peaks of the Himalayas color soft red and then witness the sunrise! Beautiful!

Hem is a man who loves his country and also can tell a lot about it; he makes contact with the people we meet along the way which makes us feel at home. He is good company: humorous, caring, and he can cook delicious! We can definitely recommend Hem!

We came to Nepal during our spring break at the beginning of April 2015.After spending a few days touring Kathmandu, we arrived in Pokhora to be greeted with a big smile by the legend that is HEM!

He was great for us and managed to sorted everything out throughout our trek, including accommodation, trekking permits, food and even got involved with us In the evenings.

We took the poon hill trek, which we managed to do in 4 days instead of 5 and his knowledge of the place and the area itself is outstanding, this man knows how to trek!

On our arrival back into Pokhora, tired and in need of a good rest, he organized a much needed massage for us and came out with us to celebrate our final evening in Nepal.

From all the boys, we would have no doubt im recommending Hem to anyone who came to stay in Nepal, he is definitely the man!

Congratulations on finding Hem's website! That is how I discovered him, too.  And I am so glad that I did. All of the other testimonials are true. He is a great guide; experienced, reliable, knowledgeable, speaks good English, great sense of humour, flexible and always attentive to how you are doing and what your needs might be. Through emails Hem and I worked out an itinerary; route and number of days trekking. For me it was in March, 2015 and I chose going up to Ghorepani / Poon Hill and then transiting the foothills below the Annapurna range. It was stunning. And yes, an exertion.  But I turned 72 a week before starting the trek and though my old knees complained, I was daily delighted with each step, each rest stop, the ever changing views, the people on the trail and every day's conclusion at a new teahouse in a new village. Much of the delight was due to Hem. He was not only a caring guide, but also my companion throughout the trek. He is now my friend.

In October, 2013, we were Team Leaders for a house-building trip to Nepal with the Fuller Center for Housing.  Following the build, we were interested in spending a week seeing Nepal and Hem, at Teahouse Trekking, was recommended to us by friends.  We were a bit intimidated by making plans to visit various parts of Nepal with a group of 15 people.  From the very first e-mail, Hem was very responsive.  He worked with us to come up with an itinerary that met our needs and fit our budget.  All accommodations, transportation and other reservations were perfect.  We were visiting during some holy festivals and Hem made sure we experienced some of the culture and traditions that were involved. We visited Chitwan National Park and Pokhara and did a three day teahouse trek.  The scenery was breathtaking!  And the opportunity to experience daily life in small Nepalese villages was something we will always remember.

Hem is responsive, personable, respectful, and fun to be with.  We would most definitely use his services again if we return to Nepal.

We can't recommend Hem highly enough! We opted for the Gurapani circuit for a 5 day/4 night trek. Hem was an amazing guide who was happy to allow us to set our own pace and always had a smile and a joke to keep us motivated. He went out if his way to ensure that we got the best treatment and facilities and when we head back to Nepal for some more trekking, Hem is definitely the man we'll be contacting!
