What a wonderful experience to travel to Nepal and go trekking with Hem.  He organised the trip for us very well and was a very patient and informative guy.  We are in our early 60's so were a little apprenhensive as to just how we would handle the walking so chose a five day four night route.  Hem was so patient and encouraging and we have to say it was such a great experience.  We were joined by a lovely young man who carried the bulk of our clothes etc. and who did a great job getting us good rooms each night.  It was so interesting to sit around the fire in the dining areas at night and meet so many people from different backgrounds all experiencing this unique country.  The beautiful forests, amazing mountains, and cosy teahouses were all fantastic.  It is an experience everyone shuld undertake some time in their life and we would recommend Hem as the one to help you plan and guide you in your adventure.

Hem was a marvelous guide for our stay in Nepal. Hem helped us see and experience more of Nepal then we ever could have done on our own. I especially loved seeing the many bird species we were able to see in the diversity of habitats he took us to visit. Many thanks, Hem, for making a trip of lifetime for us!

Namaste,

I know Nepal more than 30 years.  I worked there for researches in human geography in the 80's.  I speak nepali and of course I know a number of Nepalese, especially guides and porters.

For the last ten years, I used to go trekking with Hem.  He is my favorite guide.  I know him very well.

I went many times to his parents' home: a family of farmers nearby Pokhara.  Like his parents, Hem is honest.  Absolutely, "No worry" with him.  He is a professional guide, fully insured, trained, trustworthy, helpful.

He always tries to do the maximum for you.  Usually you don't have to ask him, because he always knows what you need and what you want.  He knows very well the Annapurnas, the Mansalu area, Everst and Dolpo.  He can easily organize for you any kind of trek, because this man is clever, and had very good connections with the other guides.  He has a good knowledge regarding geography, cultures, traditions, wild life about the Himalayan region.

Last, but not least, Hem has a very good sense of relationaship with Nepalese and foreigners.  Everywhere, with everybody, he know how to talk and what to do.

I recommended Hem to many friends.  All of them were enthusiastic about him.  He is friendly and very reliable.  With him, you will trek safely and happy!  He has a very good sense of humour.

He is the father of two children and uses to work hard for all his family, including his parents.  Don't miss the opportunity to give work to this ice many who has a big heart, a good smile and a very good sense of his duty and relationship.

I am sure he will do the best for you and you will be happy to trek with him.

I recommend Hem highly. I was given his name by someone who highly recommended him. We emailed back and forth prior to my arrival to set up a plan for my trek to Mt. Everest base camp. He made all of the arrangements for this trek. On this trek, I was the only client. After this trek we went to the Chitwan National Park and spent a few days in Kathmandu and Pokhara in addition to trekking for three days in the Annapurna region. Nepal
is a very beautiful country and I wanted to see as much as possible. He was very knowledgeable and with his expertise, I was able to see many interesting sites within Nepal that I never would have considered or known about. For example, in Pokhara we went to the Tibetan refugee camp. They were not mentioned in my Nepal handbook. When I wanted to go to the International Mountaineering Museum in Pokhara, he made arrangements for me to see this wonderful museum.

On our 1st day of the Mt Everest trek, we were not able to go to Lukla due to the weather. He took this in stride and we toured the Thamel region of Kathmandu. The next day we flew into Lukla and started our trek to Mt. Everest base camp. During the trek he provided expert guidance and carefully monitored my activities to make sure that I was not getting sick from altitude sickness. He is very professional and made all arrangements and was always making sure that I was Ok. He would point out the mountains
and other interesting sites along the way. We went to Khumjung to see the Edmund Hillary school that Hillary established. He arranged for me to have tour of the school and to meet the headmaster. This was quite memorable. We trekked up to base camp and I have attached a picture of Hem, me and
our porter at base camp. We completed the trek in 12 days but Hem would accommodate a longer time frame to compete the trek.

After the trek I spent several days in Kathmandu and met with a group from the USA to build several homes in the Trishuli area of Nepal. We did this with the Fuller Center for Housing. After the home building activities were completed the home building group hired Hem for additional activities. Hem was our guide for the Chitwan National Park, our time in Pokhara and our trek in the Annapurna region. Again he was very professional. He
demonstrated that he was an excellent guide not only for me as an individual on the Mt Everest trek but was able to put together an excellent tour for 16 people. In the Chitwan National Park, we had walking tours in the forest, did some birding, and rode elephants into the jungle where we saw rhinos. After the elephant ride we gave the elephants a bath. This was quite an experience. (See picture) After our Chitwan adventure, wewent to Pokhara. Pokhara is a beautiful and while not as well known as Kathmandu, it should be be on everyone's destination when going to Nepal.
We spent a 3 days on a short trek in the Annapurna.

All in all, Hem made my time in Nepal excellent and I hope that I can get back to Nepal. I want to trek above Mt. Everest base camp and reach the Khumbu Ice Fall or to do some trekking in the Annapurna region. There is so much to see in Nepal. With Hem's experience, he will enhance your Nepal adventure.

I’m happy to recommend Hem as a friendly, reliable and knowledgeable guide. We had a five-day Poon Hill trek together at the beginning of Nov. 2013.

The first day we started from Nayapul and stayed the first night in Hile (1400m). The second day definitely was harder for me to climb up all day long to Ghorepani (2874m). The day after, such a big day it was. We woke up in the early morning and walk up about 1 hour to see the stunning sunrise in Poon Hill (3210m). It was quite exciting to see the sunrise with everyone. The sky at dawn was so clear that we can enjoy the snow mountain view with golden sunlight color.  At the same day, we kept moving to Tadapani (2625m). The fourth day, waking up early again to see another great sunrise was worth it.  It was wonderful to have a lovely breakfast with the wonderful mountain landscape because Hem chose a good location of tea house for me. After breakfast, we walked about 3 hours from Tadapani to Ghandruk (1900m). We walked around to visit this typical village which is like a museum to know the Nepali’s daily life. The last day we needed to go back to Pokhara. However, we got a problem with the transportation. As our plan, taking local bus was the best option back to Pokhara, but no local buses were operated because of the strike for the election. All I can choose was to take a taix/tourist bus with the unreasonable charge or to walk from Nayapul back to Pokhara. Luckily, Hem helped me a lot to save some cost for it.

This trekking was absolutely an unforgettable and enjoyable trip for me. Because of Hem’s endeavors as a guide, all of the accommodations were perfect. Besides, I always could get the hot meals and hot showers as soon as possible after trekking hard all day. It was a good time to trek with Hem, who is a caring and nice friend. I highly recommend him as a guide for trekking in Nepal.

Below is my photo of Hem on our trek.

We cannot recommend Hem highly enough!  We opted for the Gurapani circuit for a five day/four night trek.  Hem was an amazing guide who was happy to allow us to set our own pace and always had a smile and a joke to keep us motivated.  He went out of his way to ensure that we got the best treatment and facilities and when we head back to Nepal for some more trekking, Hem is definitely the man we'll be contacting!

Steve and Eva Wilkinson, North Adams, Massachusetts, USA

Although our brief experience with Hem in Pokhara pales in comparison to other stories of trekking with him, we can whole-heartedly recommend him as a knowledgable and personable guide.  He was a great help in organizing some changes to our transportation for the next leg of our trip even though it wasn't really his responsibility. He also made arrangements for our paragliding and was attentive to our wishes and priorities.

We wish him the best in his endeavors as a guide and will contact him when we make plans to return to Nepal for a trek.

Namaste Everyone,

We write these few words just to recommend our guide and friend Hem. We spent five days together for the "Mardi Himal" trek, beginning of March 2013.

We went up to 4500m on the Mardi Himal trail. The first day we went through the mystic and humid forest. We stayed the first night at forest camp (2700m).The second day we climbed up to high camp (3900m). It was snowing there, this day was gorgeous. We were always front of the Machhapuchare Mountain (6993m). That was marvelous. On the West, we had a great view on the Himchuli mountain and the Annapurna I and Annapurna south. The day after, we tried to reach the Mardi Himal's base camp. We were not far but we had to stop at 4500m, we were within clouds, and we had to come back on the same day, unfortunately. So we went down to Sidhing village. This village was beautiful with terrace cultivations and a great sunset on the Macchapuchare. The fourth day, we came back to Pokhara in the afternoon and had great fun with Hem. We spent one more day in Pokhara, and we went to the lake and to the peace pagoda with Hem. We needed to relax after an intense trekking.

That was five great and unforgettable days. It was a real pleasure to meet Hem. We had fun all along the trek, thanks to my friend Antoine as well. The accommodation in tea houses, and the food (daal bat most of the time : Daalbat power 24 hours !) were perfect. Every night where we had a stop, we met very lovely people around the wood stove. We discover as well the Kurkuri Rum, which helps you to feel better even at 3900m!

If you're asking : "What to do ? Katmandu?" I tell you: "green curry, no worries", contact Hem, and he will find you the perfect trek and activities for your travel in Nepal.

Best wishes for all of you and nice trip,

Brice and Antoine

From the moment I sent my first email to Hem months before our trip, to him waiting with us for our flight in Chitwan, he was a pleasure to work with and a huge help. I was feeling overwhelmed trying to organize our trip and Hem was there for every step with helpful suggestions and managing a lot of planes, trains and even a rental car for us all to get to Chitwan National Park - some of which was  was for our vacation before and after our trek with him. He is knowledgeable and a fun addition to your vacation. By the end of our time together, I really felt like we were hanging out with a friend and not a tour guide. He was patient as we stopped for photographs and breaks and kept us going at a comfortable and reasonable pace, making sure we were enjoying ourselves and keeping us informed about the landscape, people and history we were passing through.
I would absolutely recommend Hem as a reliable, helpful, and knowledgeable guide and someone you can feel comfortable entrusting your trip to.

On the trail with Hem and the porters and one of our traveling companions

Testimonial for Hem Raj Adhikari

My wife and I spent 10 days in the care of Hem Raj Adhikari during the Fall 2012 trekking season. What a great guide and wonderful human being. He is a seasoned professional, knowledgeable and always looking out for the best interest of his clients.

Long before we arrived in Nepal, Hem was in frequent contact with us. He spent a lot of time ensuring that he understood our expectations and interests for the trip. He diligently researched a number of options to enhance our trip and enrich our understanding of Nepal. He arranged a home stay for us in a remote, Gurung village (which was one of the high points of our time in Nepal).

When we arrived in Nepal, he had taken care of all of our internal flights, accommodations and trekking needs. When our flight from Pokhara to Jomsom was cancelled due to inclement weather, Hem conferred with us and spent over an hour making all the arrangements for us to travel overland to our destination. He was scrupulous in keeping track of the effect these changes had on our bill and credited us the difference without any effort on our part. He was always our strongest advocate in all dealings with vendors.

Here I am with Hem on the trail.

Once we were with Hem, we felt completely safe and cared for. He is a very knowledgeable man, able to give us abundant background information about our trekking routes, explain local customs and provide cultural context to us. He is a tireless trekker and never rests until he is certain that his clients are fully cared for. He provided two excellent porters to carry the bulk of our gear, while we walked with just our daypacks and camera equipment. Average daily walking distance for us was about 5-8 miles with perfectly spaced tea house stops to keep our fluids, calories and spirits topped up.

We intend to return to Nepal within the next few years and will use Hem and his Nepal Teahouse Trekking business to set up our trip and guide us once again. I give him my highest recommendation to anyone contemplating trekking in Nepal.

Hem Raj Adhikari is a skilled, professional, and compassionate Nepali guide. Hem helped us with our itinerary via email long before we began our trip. We shared our interests and places we wanted to visit. He helped us to find ways to put it all together. In addition to guiding us around the mountains of the Annapurna district, he arranged our air and ground transportation, found fascinating places for us to visit (Chitwan National Park, a home stay in the mountains, a Tibetan Refugee Camp where they wove beautiful rugs, Devi Falls, etc.), to eat, and to sleep, and found helpful friendly porters to assist us. He was always at the head of the line representing our interests in airports and was on the phone immediately making alternative plans when one of our flights was canceled due to weather.

Hem is a caring soul. I was especially impressed with the gentle guidance he offered to the little children/monastics who were teasing each other outside the temple during our visit in Kagbeni. I also impressed with his sensitivity and professionalism when another trekker who was with a different guide, asked for his contact information. Hem assured him that he already had an excellent guide and, therefore, didn't need his information. That response deeply moved me. As I thought about the fact that his work as a guide is the primary support for his wife and children, as well as support for his parents and wider family, I felt almost moved to tears.

Hem is an impressive man and we respect him deeply. My husband and I intend to return to Nepal. Connecting with Hem again will definitely be a part of our trip. I recommend him as a guide as highly as I could recommend any professional.

We toured Nepal in 2012 with target locations of Lumbini, Pokhara and Kathmandu. Pokhara was our hub for the week long trek in the Annapoorna Reserves. It was our first trip to Nepal and initially we were a bit scared how we will be able to do it. We went for an ideal guide through the net and that was how we landed on Hemraj Adhikari. After exchanges of our plans and his suggestions, we drew up the final plan. He made all arrangements like cab from Kathmandu to Lumbini, Accommodation at Lumbini, cab to Pokhara, Accommodation at Pokhara, week long trek and also cab to Kathmandu from Pokhara. The lodges for the trek were very good and we really enjoyed the stay and food in the hills. Since the trekking speed of our group members were different, Hem often adjusted his speed to be with all the members of the group.

On the whole, the trip was totally enjoyable with excellent stay and food arrangements, all materialized through the arrangements made by Hem Adhikari . I have no reservations in recommending Hem as the guide for any such trips in Nepal.

David, Tulasi (Hem's brother and our porter), and Hem on the way from Kagbeni.

We have trekked with Hem four times now.  Once in 2010 and again in 2012 for two treks.  We found him on the web in 2009 as we were planning our second trip to Nepal.  We contacted several trekking companies and some told us we were too old for them to take on a trek (we are both now in our 70's).  Hem had no such reservations for which we were very glad.

We used Hem to make our hotel accommodations outside of Kathmandu as we were traveling with a group and already had a place to stay when we arrived.  He did, however, assist us with our guest house when we had problems contacting them.  He made all our flight arrangements within the country; hotel reservations and ground transportation during non trek periods as well.  During our treks he handled everything and he made certain we were well prepared for each day's journey.

We recommend Hem without reservation to any and all!  He is a great guide; he is flexible in meeting changes in plans that are out of one's control; and is patient and never seems to get upset when we have to deal with the sudden loss of a flight (due to high winds in the mountains) or needing to take a jeep or bus someplace because of previous schedules we cannot change.

We consider ourselves lucky to have Hem as one of our friends.  We have met his lovely wife and played with his children.  We have shared many wonderful moments with him from sunrises on high peaks to cups of hot masala tea at the end of a long day.

We made trekking tours with Hem in 2006 and 2008.  We have the best memories and enjoyed our visits to Nepal especially because of the kind care of Hem on our trekking tours.

We recommend Hem's assistance to everyone.  My wife and I love Nepal - and never forget our trekking tours with Hem to Annapurna basecamp and Pooh Hill.
